Full Description

PRN 50723 A four storey red-brick mill with Welsh slate roof behind parapet. Fire- proof building with cast iron columns, brick-vault ceilings and Yorkshire floors. Access to both river Trent and the road. Used as oil mill processing linseed imported from overseas to the port of Gainsborough. {1} Built in the early 19th century, probably about 1830. Could have been used as a bonded warehouse as the port customs house was on the north side. Shown on Ibbotson's map (1833) but not annotated. Described as Baltic Oil Mill on Ordnance Survey map of 1886. Machinery from the Trent Port oil mill at Marton transferred here c1860. The original building has mid-19th century extensions to north and south. This probably indicates use as an oil mill from this time. Long disused, last recorded use as a double glazing manufactory in the 1970s. {1} It has been demolished in 1995. {4} Two trial trenches were opened in 1989, uncovering river flood deposits beneath the mill. {2}
