Full Description
TWO RETOUCHED FLINTS FOUND CLOSE TO FOSSDYKE CANAL IN BURTON AT SK 9320 7395. {1}, HTM 7M
96 Mesolithic to early Bronze Age flints were found during the evaluation at Burton Waters during fieldwalking and trial trenching. Two concentrations were identified in Fields 3 (Scatter B - SK 9324 7395) and 4 (Scatter A - SK 9345 7350). Half the tools appear to be Mesolithic, but in the absence of microliths it is not possible to assign them to the early, mid or late Mesolithic. It seems to be a short-medium term and/or repeat activity site. Finds include scrapers, flakes, blades, notched flakes, piercers and cores. {2}{3}{4}
Phase II trial trenching of fields 1 and 3 revealed further archaeological remains. Test pit sieving across scatter B provided further artefactual evidence including 4 sherds of early Bronze Age pottery. Two of them are joining sherds from a small shell/limestone tempered 'pygmy' cup. {5}
