Full Description

THE DOMESDAY BOOK RECORDS NO LESS THAN 7 HOLDINGS UNDER CABOURNE, BUT BY THE EARLY C13 THESE HAD BEEN REDUCED TO TWO PRINCIPAL SECULAR HOLDINGS. THERE WERE ALSO MONASTIC AND ECCLESIATICAL HOLDINGS, PARTICULARLY SHEEP FARMING. SOME POPULATION DECLINE OCCURRED IN C14. A COHERENT CHRONOLOGICAL AND MORPHOLOIGCAL HISTORY FOR THIS SETTLEMENT IS MADE DIFFICULT BY THE COMPLEXITY OF THE EXTANT EARTHWORKS, THE LOSS OF UPSTANDING DETAIL IN CERTAIN AREAS DUE TO PLOUGHING (DAMAGE AND DESTRUCTION OCCURRED IN 1965, 1968 AND THE MID 1980'S), AND THE POSITIONS OF SURVIVNG FARMSTEADS AND COTTAGES. NOT ALL THE AREAS WHERE THERE HAS BEEN OCCUPATION WERE USED AT THE SAME TIME; THIS IS ILLUSTRATED BY SOME PROPERTIES OVERLYING RIDGE AND FURROW. {2} CABOURNE PARISH IS DOCUMENTED AS HAVING ACCESS TO CAISTOR MOOR COMMON GRAZING LAND. {4} THERE WAS A DENSE CONCENTRATION OF MEDIEVAL POTTERY NOTED TO THE NORTH OF THE VILLAGE. {6}
