Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF BROXHOLME IS OF OUTSTANDING INTEREST BECAUSE OF THE EXCELLENT DOCUMENTATION OF ITS POST MEDIEVAL AND EARLY MODERN DECLINE THROUGH A SERIES OF MAPS FROM ABOUT 1600 ONWARDS. THE MORPHOLOGY OF THE VILLAGE ITSELF POINTS TO CONSIDERABLE DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE IN THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD. THE SURVIVING MEDIEVAL POPULATION RECORDS INDICATE THAT BROXHOLME WAS ALWAYS A SETTLEMENT OF AVERAGE SIZE IN THE AREA, AND WAS LITTLE AFFECTED BY THE BLACK DEATH. THE MOST PROMINENT EARTHWORK FEATURE ON THE SITE, A BROAD AND DEEP HOLLOW STREET WITH EAST-WEST RIDGE AND FURROW TERMINATING ON A HEADLAND ALONG ITS WEST SIDE, IS ALIGNED NORTH-SOUTH. ON THE EAST LIE THE REMAINS OF THE SERIES OF PROPERTIES ON THE ESTATE MAPS, SEPARATED BY SHALLOW DITCHES AND WITH BUILDING SITES AND YARDS MARKED BY PLATFORMS AND HOLLOWS AND SOME WELLS. {3} MUCH POTTERY FOUND IN FIELDWALKING, INCLUDING SOME FROM CROFTS AND SOME FROM RIDGE AND FURROW, THE LATTER POSSIBLY DUE TO AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES. {1}{2} The scheduling includes the known extent of the surviving earthwork and buried remains of the medieval village of Broxholme and its former open fields. {8}
