Full Description

FORMERLY PART OF THORESWAY IN A STEEP-SIDED CHALK VALLEY. THE ARRANGEMENT OF THE PRESENT SETTLEMENT SUGGESTS A GAPPED 2 ROW STREET VILLAGE OF FAIRLY REGULAR FORM - AN INTERPRETATION SUPERFICIALLY REINFORCED BY THE EARTHWORKS LINING BOTH SIDES OF THE MAIN VALLEY, IN PART FORMING CLOSES LAID OUT FROM BOTH SIDES OF THE STREET. THE PROVED COMPLEXITY OF THE WOLDS VILLAGES, TOGETHER WITH THE DETAILED INTRICACIES OF THE EARTHWORKS AT THORESWAY RULE OUT ANY SUCH SIMPLISTIC INTERPRETATION AND COMBINE TO PRESENT A HIGHLY COMPLEX SETTLEMENT WHOSE MORPHOLOGY CANNOT BE READILY INTERPRETED. A SUBSTANTIAL GROUP OF EARTHWORKS RECORDED ON APS IN A LARGE FIELD SE OF THE CHURCH WERE PLOUGHED OUT IN 1962. IN THE POST-CONQUEST PERIOD THERE WERE TWO MAIN MANORS IN THORESWAY, BOTH OF WHICH CAN BE TRACED UNTIL C15 WHEN THEY WERE FINALLY JOINED TOGETHER. FOR MORE DETAILS SEE EVERSON, TAYLOR AND DUNN. {3} SHERDS OF MEDIEVAL POTTERY WERE FOUND AT TF 175968. {6}, HTM 76 M
