Full Description

Burton village was a multi-manorial settlement throughout the Middle Ages and no holding was overwhelmingly predominant. The siting of the village may have been influenced by the presence of a Roman Villa. When the village cam in to the hands of the Monson family in the later 16th century and was consolidated into single ownership in the 17th century, the change was considerable. It was marked by a protracted alteration to the nature and layout of the settlement, involving the contraction and simplification of the village under the influence and encroachment of the hall and its parkland setting. This can be traced in the village morphology and the fragmentary earthworks in combination with the evidence of the estate maps. {1}, HTM 35 M
