Full Description
PRN 50507
ALTHOUGH ONE OF THE 'GREAT DEPOPULACIONS' REPORTED IN 1607, FEW TRACES OF THE EARLY SETTLEMENT EXIST IN THE PARK LAND AND THOSE THAT DO ARE POORLY PRESERVED. THE SURVIVING EARTHWORKS SCARCELY BEGIN TO REFLECT THE COMPLEXITY SUGGESTED BY THE DOCUMENTS OR THE EXTENT OF WHAT MUST HAVE BEEN A MODERATELY LARGE MEDIEVAL SETTLEMENT. THOSE THAT SURVIVE ARE POORLY DEFINED SINCE THEY WERE PLOUGHED DURING THE SECOND WORLD WAR. THEY COMPRISE THE BATTERED REMAINS OF A HOLLOW-WAY CONTINUING THE LINE OF THE ROAD NORTH FROM WILLOUGHTON, THEN CURVING EAST AND DIVIDING.
INDETERMINATE BANKS AND DITCHES ON EITHER SIDE OF THE HOLLOW-WAY PROBABLY MARK FORMER STREETS AND PROPERTY PLOTS AS THE 1838 FIELD-NAME 'OLD HOUSE CLOSE' SUGGESTS, THOUGH SOME OF THE EARTHWORKS EAST OF THE MODERN NORTH-SOUTH ROAD MAY BE THE RESULT OF MODERN DISTURBANCE. THE MAIN HOLLOW-WAY WAS A ROAD IN USE UNTIL AFTER 1855 ALTHOUGH NO STRUCTURES LAY ALONG IT EVEN IN THE EARLY C19. THE PRESENT ESTATE VILLAGE TO THE SOUTHEAST IS A LATE C18 CREATION OF THE LUARDS. ALL THE PLOTS THERE OVERLIE RIDGE-AND-FURROW WHERE IT CAN BE TRACED. ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE VILLAGE STREET HOWEVER, APs SEEM TO SHOW TRACES OF EARTHWORKS AND THE EMPTY CLOSES ON THE TITHE MAP ARE NAMED 'HOUSE CLOSE'. SEE EVERSON, TAYLOR AND DUNN FOR DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND HISTORY. {1}
A watching brief was carried out at Northside (SK 93714 94281). An undated possible stone wall footing was uncovered and this may represent the remains of a medieval agricultural building, although it may alternatively be of post medieval date (see PRN 53900). Ridge and furrow earthworks were observed to the west of the site. {3}{4}
