Full Description

PRN 50494 A COMPLEX OF STAVE-BUILT HALL, BOWER, KITCHEN AND WEAVING SHED, SURROUNDED BY A DEFENSIVE RAMPART AND DITCH, FIRST CONSTRUCTED AROUND 850 AD ON PART OF THE MIDDLE SAXON SETTLEMENT. A SEQUENCE OF REBUILDINGS CULMINATED IN A REPLANNING IN THE PERIOD c1000-1080 WITHIN A LARGER DEFENSIVE ENCLOSURE. THE POSSIBLE MANORIAL ENCLOSURE WAS SUPERSEDED BY THE BUILDING OF A MOTTE AND BAILEY CASTLE IN c1080. {2}{3} FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION SEE BERESFORD, 1987. {3} The dating of the pottery from this excavation needs some revision in the light of recent research. {5}
