Full Description
PRN 50465
A RING DITCH AT TF13089715 WAS VISIBLE AS MARKS IN A RIPENING CROP IN 1976 AP BY PAUL EVERSON. {2}
THE MONUMENT INCLUDES THE BURIED REMAINS OF A BRONZE AGE BOWL BARROW LOCATED ON A PLATEAU BETWEEN THE SOURCE OF THE NETTLETON BECK TO THE NORTH AND THE OTBY BECK TO THE SOUTH. IT IS SITUATED APPROXIMATELY 70 M NORTH OF A FIELD BOUNDARY AND IS CLEARLY VISIBLE AS A CROPMARK FROM THE AIR REPRESENTING A CIRCULAR FEATURE WITH AN ENCLOSING DITCH 25 M IN DIAMETER. A SECOND, SIMILAR MONUMENT IDENTIFIED FROM AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS LIES SOME 50 M TO THE WEST (PRN 50204 SAM 27898), WITH A THIRD BOWL BARROW C.100 M TO THE SOUTH-WEST (PRN 52843 SAM 27893). THESE MONUMENTS ARE THE SUBJECTS OF SEPARATE SCHEDULINGS. THE MONUMENT IS ONE OF A NUMBER OF NEOLITHIC AND BRONZE AGE BURIAL MOUNDS IN THE AREA WHICH ARE ASSOCIATED WITH THE HEADS AND VALLEYS OF THE NETTLETON AND OTBY BECKS AND WITH HIGH STREET, APPROXIMATELY 300 M TO THE EAST, WHICH ORIGINATED AS A PREHISTORIC TRACKWAY AND IS INDICATIVE OF THE RITUAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THIS LOCATION. THE NUMBER AND FREQUENCY OF THESE MONUMENTS POSES WIDER QUESTIONS CONCERNING PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENT PATTERNS AND DEMOGRAPHY. ALTHOUGH THE BARROW HAS BEEN DEGRADED BY PLOUGHING ITS BURIED REMAINS WILL RETAIN VALUABLE ARCHAEOLOGICAL INFORMATION, INCLUDING FUNERARY DEPOSITS, WITHIN THE DITCH AND ON AND UNDER THE ORIGINAL GROUND SURFACE CONCERNING THE BARROW'S DATING AND CONSTRUCTION. ENVIROMENTAL EVIDENCE PRESERVED IN THE SAME DEPOSITS WILL ILLUSTRATE THE NATURE OF THE LANDSCAPE IN WHICH THE MONUMENT WAS SET. FOR MORE DETAIL SEE THE SCHEDULING DOCUMENT 27897. {3}, DIAMETER 29 M, HTM 160 M
Part of the barrow ditch was sectioned during the watching brief on the Britsh Gas pipeline and a magnetometry survey was carried out over the area, though this did not reveal any recognisable features. The ditch had a gently inclined, very rounded profile and measured 0.7m deep by 2.65m wide. No finds were made.{5}
