Full Description

A Bronze Age barrow cemetery has been identified on land to the north of Otby Top Farm. The cemetery it thought to be comprised of the partially ploughed out remains of at least six former bowl and round barrows, some visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs, and others as soilmarks on the ground. The barrows were recorded as being located near the following rough grid references; TF 139 955, TF 139 954, TF 140 954, TF 141 953, TF 141 952, and TF 140 953. {1}{2}{3}{4} One of the Bronze Age barrows in the Otby Top Barrow Cemetery was subject to partial excavation in 1969. A single trial trench was excavated, which cut through part of the encircling ditch of the ploughed out barrow at TF 1397 9542. A number of Bronze Age waste flint flakes were recovered from the bottom of the plough soil, together with fragments of animal and human bones, and traces of wood ash and burnt clay. A number of redeposited Neolithic Grimston Ware pottery sherds were also recovered, suggesting the barrow was located on the site of earlier activity (see MLI50232). {5} Two of the bowl barrows in the barrow cemetery were designated as a scheduled monument in 1999 (located at TF1403 9530 and TF 1399 9553). They were included in the same scheduling with the buried remains of an adjacent long mortuary enclosure of the Neolithic period (see MLI50233). {6}
