Full Description
Probable prehistoric barrow cemetery, to the west of Spridlington. This site covers several fields and has been noticed over a number of years on aerial photographs taken by the RCHME. The site comprises a large complex of cropmarks of at least 8 ring ditches or round barrows, both single and double-ditched, and of likely Bronze Age date. A number of pits have also been noted across the site, which occupies fields to both the north and south of Cliff Road. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{10}
The probable barrow cemetery was identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. The NMP recorded a number of single and double ditched ring features to both north and south of the road, with diameters varying from c.12m to c.42m. A possible square barrow was also noted, which could indicate a continuation of use of the cemetery into the Iron Age. {11}
One of the barrows is visible as a cropmark on a more recent aerial photograph of 2011, as a circuit of ditch with a diameter of approximately 20m. {12}
