Full Description

The remains of a round barrow were discovered in 1787, during the construction of the Pelham Mausoleum (see MLI50433). Two cinerary urns containing burnt bones and ashes were found inside the barrow, along with a variety of rings, beads and comb fragments. The dating of the barrow is uncertain, with both a Roman and an Anglo-Saxon origin suggested, although the presence of comb fragments and beads might indicate that the Saxon origin is more likely. The finds appear to have been split between several collections, although their current whereabouts are no longer known. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7} The barrow mound was largely destroyed during the construction of the mausoleum, although ephemeral remains were noted in 1999, during a walk-over survey of land at the Brocklesby Estate. {8}{9}
