Full Description
Site of the moated manor house of Somerby Hall mentioned in documentary sources of 1616 and shown on the Estate Map of 1777. {1}
The old moated manor house at Somerby with its gardens and orchards was recorded in 1616. The site presumably lies under the later Somerby Hall, whose layout in the 18th and 19th centuries is depicted on estate plans. The hall remained in residential use until c.1920 and is now a ruin.
A deer park occupied much of the former township of Somerby and belonged to the late medieval or early post-medieval mansion. In 1616, the woods of the township were said to be 'for the most part imparked': the rectangular park and its pale are depicted on county and area maps into the early 19th century, and the 12m wide 'pale walk' or 'deer leap' is noted on its south and east sides on estate and tithe maps. {2}
