Full Description
A hermitage chapel or holy well site dedicated to St Helen was located below the cliff at Hemswell. {1}
Though sometimes described as a well or hermitage chapel (perhaps indeed its origin), St Helen's was descriebd as a church in the returns of 1291 and 1428 (when it was exempt from tax with less than 10 supporting households). It was not listed in the returns of 1535, suggesting it had been demolished prior to that date. Stone-lined or cist graves have been turned up in its former yard, and a gilt-bronze roundel of 8th century date has been found there (see MLI51000). There are no longer any visible remains in the field, and the full extent of the former church site is not clearly known. The RCHME noted a prominent hollow way leading up the hill slope to the site from Bunkers Hill to the south, which may have been an access route. {2}
