Full Description

The Church of St Peter is Norman [1066 to 1200] to Perpendicular [1180 to c.1520] in date and was badly restored in 1820. The abaci and tympanum, built in the southern doorway, may have been retained from an earlier building. {1}{2}{3} Parish church dating from the 12th century, with alterations and additions in the 13th, 15th and 16th centuries, 1820, 1831 and the 20th century. Built of coursed limestone rubble with plaster patches, and features lead roofs. Comprised of a western tower, nave, north aisle, vestry, chancel and south porch. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {4}{5} Stained glass in this church, possibly in situ, dates to c.1300 AD. {6} There are Saxo-Norman capitals on the south door of the nave. {7} Evidence of some of the earlier phases of the church's construction was revealed in April 2014, during the archaeological monitoring of various internal and external works. This evidence included the remains of an earlier rammed chalk floor surface which was exposed within the nave. This surface overlaid an east to west orientated wall foundation for an earlier north wall to the nave, which likely dated to the 12th century. {8}{9} Historic graffiti at this church was recorded in May 2018 by the Lincolnshire Medieval Graffiti Project. The survey identified only one historic mark, being some faded lettering on the eastern exterior wall. {10}{11}
