A hoard of 15000 to 20000, 3rd century Roman bronze coins was found at 'Riby Farm' in 1953. The coins were held in a globular two-handled urn, covered by a dish, and apparently ranged from Gallenius to Aurelian. The coin hoard went to the Ashmolean Museum pending classification, after which it was returned to Lincoln. The father of the finder confirmed the find-spot reference given was accurate, placing the find near to Grange Wold Farm, to the south-west of Riby. {1}{2}{3}{4} 'At Riby Wold Farm on the east side of Lincolnshire Wolds, some 4-5 miles north-east of Caistor on the western escarpment, one of the largest hoards yet found was turned up in deep ploughing. It contained 15000-20000 coins in good preservation, weighing upwards of 1 hundredweight, tightly packed in a large globular two-handled urn covered by a dish. The coins are still under examination but they are all bronze and appear to date from about Gallienus to Aurelian.' All of the coins were antoniniani, with a total of 13730 coins, ranging from Gordian III to Probus (238 - 282 AD) being recorded. {5}
