Full Description

A remarkable 14th century manor house made almost entirely of chalk which is very rare in Lincolnshire. {1} Attached to the west end of the farmhouse are the remains of the 14th century house of the South family. It is a rectangle of two storeys. The room below has a piscina (chapel?) and the room above has a hooded fireplace on corbelled brackets and blocked pointed entrances in the east wall. In the west front are two windows, one of three lights with cusped ogee tracery and a drip mould on head corbels. This is of the Decorated period of English Gothic (c.1290 to c.1350). {2} The site was originally moated; part of the moat can be seen to the north of the early block. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3}
