Full Description
On Foundry Street stands the former workhouse which was erected in 1837-38. The central block is square, with pedimented square bays projecting from the corners. Some of the associated buildings still survive. {1}{2}
The workhouse was produced by Scott and Moffatt. They turned their backs on the 'square' workhouse and created a structure which was made up of three main buildings. They were an entrance range, the main building and an infirmary flanked by workshops. The design of the workhouse was approved in March 1837 and built by 1838. {4}
The site of an evaluation at the former Highways depot falls within the boundaries of the workhouse. Walls believed to be the remains of the workhouse infirmary were recorded, as well as a lowered terrace on the north boundary of the site. A quarry and refuse pits, possibly associated with the workhouse were also identified. {2}{3}
The workhouse buildings became a childrens' home in 1933 and in 1968 this closed and the building became part of Horncastle College. {5}
During groundworks for the installation of a generator and EV charger associated with the new public sector hub to the south of the workhouse building, a deep circular brick-lined well covered by a flat stone slab was revealed. The 1888 1:500 OS map of Horncastle shows a short path leading south from the workhouse to a square structure, possibly a wellhead for this well. {6}{7}
