Full Description

AN EXCAVATION IN ADVANCE OF A RESERVOIR EXTENSION ALLOWED PART OF A LATE IRON AGE OCCUPATION SITE TO BE EXAMINED (PRN 43692). ONE OF THE EARLIEST FEATURES IDENTIFIED WITHIN THE ENCLOSED AREA WAS AN IRON AGE INHUMATION. THE BURIAL MAY PRE-DATE THE ENCLOSURE DITCH ALTHOUGH POTTERY FROM THE GRAVE FILL AND FROM THE LOWER FILL OF THE DITCH IS BROADLY CONTEMPORY. TWO SMALL SHERDS WERE FOUND IN THE GRAVE FILL. THE GRAVE WAS CUT BY A GULLY OF SIMILAR DATE SUGGESTING THAT THE GRAVE WAS EITHER NO LONGER VISIBLE ON THE SURFACE AND HAD BEEN FORGOTTEN, OR THAT THE BURIAL WAS NOT OF A STATUS THAT WARRANTED FURTHER CONSIDERATION AFTER INTERMENT. THE HUMAN REMAINS WERE THOSE OF AN OLDER MALE. {1}{2}
