Full Description

AN EXCAVATION IN ADVANCE OF A RESERVOIR EXTENSION ALLOWED PART OF AN IRON AGE SITE TO BE EXAMINED. A NUMBER OF DITCHES, GULLIES AND PITS WERE IDENTIFIED WITH POTTERY, VIRTUALLY ALL OF WHICH DATED TO THE LATE IRON AGE, SUGGESTING A PURELY DOMESTIC OCCUPATION. THERE WAS SOME EVIDENCE FOR EAVES-DRIP GULLIES OF ROUND HOUSES. THERE WAS FAUNAL EVIDENCE FOR DOMESTIC ANIMALS: CATTLE, PIG, SHEEP, HORSE AND DOG; AND WILD ANIMALS: HOUSE MICE, WOOD MOUSE, SHREW, MOLE AND VOLE. THERE WAS ALSO THE BURNT BONES OF A REDWING OR THRUSH THAT WAS POSSIBLY ROASTED AND EATEN. THE PRESENCE OF A POSSIBLE FRAGMENT OF LOOM WEIGHT AND AN IRON NEEDLE MAY INDICATE TEXTILE MANUFACTURE. EVIDENCE FOR AGRICULTURAL PRACTICE INCLUDED WHEAT, BARLEY AND OAT GRAINS AS WELL AS WILD PLANTS ASSOCIATED WITH ARABLE CULTIVATION. AN ENCLOSURE DITCH WITH POSSIBLE BANK DEFINED THE SETTLEMENT. THIS DITCH WAS NON-DEFENSIVE BEING ONLY 2.5 METRES WIDE AND 0.8 METRES DEEP, IT WOULD HAVE SERVED AS A STOCK CONTROL MECHANISM. THERE WAS A SECOND DITCH FOLLOWING A SIMILAR ALIGNMENT AND MAY BE A REPLACEMENT FOR THE SILTED UP ORIGINAL DITCH TO THE NORTH AND EAST. THERE WERE SMALL AMOUNTS OF SLAG FOUND ON THE SITE. {1}{2}
