Full Description

PRN 43628 The Priory of St Peter in Markby was founded by Ralph fitz Gilbert almost certainly during the reign of Henry II since he had died well before 1204 when the house is first documented. The house was of the Augustinian order. The prior and five canons received pensions in 1536 when the house was dissolved. {1}{2}{3} The site comprises an extensive perimeter moat enclosing earthworks and fishponds. {5} During a watching brief for a dwelling at TF 4885 7899 on the north side of the priory precinct, the remains of the northern edge of the moat that surrounded the priory were identified. It was recorded in section and this suggested a total width of up to 14m and a water-span of perhaps 10m. {6}{7} Excavation of trenches alongside the existing east and south concrete foundations for a proposed garage east of Moat House revealed a partial profile of the north edge and bed of the infilled moat bounding the north side of the site of the medieval priory. The 3m width of the moat bed exposed in section shows that had a flat base. The exact position of the north-east outer angle cannot be located with certainty. {9}{7}
