LONG BARROW, NORTH OF CADWELL, SITUATED IN A SMALL COPSE BELOW AN E-W RIDGE. {1}{2}{3}
THE MONUMENT INCLUDES THE EARTHWORK AND BURIED REMAINS OF A NEOLITHIC LONG BARROW LOCATED C.350 M NORTH OF THE A153 LOUTH-HORNCASTLE ROAD, CLOSE TO ITS JUNCTION WITH NEW LANE LEADING INTO THE VILLAGE OF TATHWELL. IT IS SITUATED BENEATH A LOW RIDGE OVERLOOKING A TRIBUTARY OF THE RIVER LUD. THE BARROW IS CLEARLY VISIBLE FROM THE ROAD, LYING WITHIN A PATCH OF SCRUBLAND SURROUNDED BY ARABLE CULTIVATION. THE MOUND MEASURES APPROX 32 M BY 12 M, STANDING TO A HEIGHT OF C.1.7 M AND IS ALIGNRD SOUTH EAST-NORTH WEST. THE SURROUNDING DITCH FROM WHICH MATERIAL FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE MOUND WAS QUARRIED IS NOT EVIDENT BUT IS EXPECTED TO SURVIVE BURIED BENEATH THE PRESENT GROUND SURFACE. NO ARCHAEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION IS KNOWN TO HAVE TAKEN PLACE AND THE MONUMENT IS THOUGHT TO BE SUBSTANTIALLY UNDISTURBED. {4}
THE LONG BARROW IS SITUATED ON A VALLEY SLOPE POSITION, NORTH FACING, OVERLOOKING THE VALLEY OF A TRIBUTARY OF THE RIVER LUD (HOD GIVEN AS 110M). IT IS A TRAPEZIFORM MOUND, WHICH SURVIVES TO A MAXIMUM OF 1.6M AT THE SOUTH END, DIMINISHING TO 0.4M AT THE NORTH. {7}, AREA 0.04H, LENGTH 32M, WIDTH 12M, HEIGHT 1.7M, HTM 130M
