Full Description
A barrow similar in type to the Wessex short type of long barrow that is also found in north-east Yorkshire. 'Here there was what I take to be a long barrow, standing at some 100 yards from the road in the middle of a ploughed field and covered with old trees. Though rabbits have burrowed in it extensively, there is no evidence that it has been disturbed and there can be no doubt about its 'long' character'. {1}
A possible but doubtful long barrow. It is scheduled. Leaf-shaped, transverse, and barbed and tanged arrowheads, plano-convex knives and scrapers etc have been picked up in the field. Finds are in the City and County Museum, Lincoln. Roman pottery is also said to have been found. A probable long barrow with a west-south-west to east-north-east orientation. The former end has a maximum height of 2.2m and the latter a maximum height of 1.5m. No side ditches are evident. From surface inspection the absence of side ditches elsewhere is common. No surface finds were made although the area has a heavy flint concentration, all of the flints are in the City and County Museum, Lincoln, but they have no knowledge of any Roman pottery. It is a substantial and prominent earthwork clearly visible from the public highway to the west. {9}
This is an elongated mound which has been truncated at both ends by ploughing. Its situation is more typical of round barrows on the wolds. The mound is more likely to represent a plough-damaged round barrow. {10}
