Full Description

Remains of Romano-British activity was noted in this area during archaeological monitoring of the digging of a water pipeline in 1997. The remains included an east to west aligned Roman ditch, the fill of which contained charcoal and burnt sandstone as well as pottery sherds. Whilst there was not necessarily evidence of an enclosed settlement here, it was thought that there may well be a Roman occupation site nearby. {1}{2} Further sherds of Roman pottery were found in this area in July 2006, during a university undergraduate research project. The investigation recovered several sherds of Roman greyware pottery, all identified as surface finds in the field. {3}{4}
