THE VILLAGE OF STAIN CONSISTS OF TWO SMALL COTTAGES. AN 11TH CENTURY TOMBSTONE (NOW IN LOUTH MUSEUM) AND 6 SKELETONS WERE FOUND WHEN A HILLOCK IN A FIELD AT STAIN HALL FARM WAS LEVELLED. THE ST JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH HAD STOOD ON THE SITE. THE VILLAGE IS SAID TO HAVE BEEN DESTROYED BY CROMWELL. A HOMESTEAD MOAT, WITH NO OTHER GROUND EVIDENCE OF A DMV, ALTHOUGH SOME BUILDING STONE IS EVIDENT IN THE PLOUGH SOIL AT THE SITE OF THE HILLOCK. {1}, AREA 0.7H, LENGTH 100M, WIDTH 70M, HTM 3M The moat was scheduled on 2 July 1999. In 1086 land at Stain was held by Earl Richard, and the moated site is believed to represent the site of the medieval manor house. {5}
