Full Description
PRN 43588
On the north side of the Market Place at Wainfleet All Saints is what is called the butter cross. The base, shaft and weather vane are on 3 steps. {1}
A tapered shaft, octagonal in section on a square plinth on a 4 step square base. The shaft is capped by a ball and weather vane, a modern replica of what was probably a 17th or 18th century replacement of the medieval finial. {2}
The shaft is of Lincolnshire limestone, nearly 4m high and worn.{6}
The base, whole shaft, and knop of the market cross are medieval, it seems; on it is a weathervane. {5}
There is a 1 metre boundary around the site that is part of the scheduling. There is a full description in the revised scheduling document 22692. {1}
The cross dates to the 15th century with a 19th century ball finial and weathervane. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {8}
