Full Description
PRN 43312
Concentrations of Mesolithic flints have been found during fieldwalking at TF 3727 6364 and TF 3735 6370. {1}
There is a further collection of worked Mesolithic flint from this field, possibly from TF 374 637. Flints include microliths, cores and scrapers, found on a sandy ledge fenwards of the Wolds. The collection is on loan to City and County Museum. It is also listed as TF 3833 6364. {2}
A rapid fieldwalking survey of the proposed East Keal bypass route demonstrated that flints were present all along the corridor with no special concentrations. The density of flint fell only slightly on the steep slope at the north end of the field where the soil is much heavier. Further flintwork was observed outside the 100m corridor, with a particular concentration on the western edge of the field. This group of material contained a number of blades and blade cores, suggesting a Mesolithic date. There is a relatively high number of blades and cores, the cores being of both earlier and later Mesolithic types. Diagnostic tools include early Mesolithic obliquely blunted point microliths. No diagnostic later Mesolithic pieces were found, but due to the nature of the survey this is not surprising. {6}{7}
Five cores, over twenty blades or flakes and a microlith are recorded in the Colonisation of Britain survey at TF 374 637 from the M. Felcey collection. The microlith is dated as Mesolithic, the other flints do not have dates. It is possible that these flints are part of those recorded elsewhere in this record. {8}
