Full Description

IN 1563 THE DIOCESAN RETURN NOTED 14 HOUSEHOLDS IN ASGARBY, A RELATIVELY LOW NUMBER IN COMPARISON WITH MANY OTHER LINCOLNSHIRE PARISHES. AT THE END OF THE C18 THE SETTLEMENT HAD DECLINED TO 'NOT A DOZEN COTTAGES'. DURING A WATCHING BRIEF AT TF 3280 6675 A BRICK-SIDED CHANNEL WAS RECORDED. IT WAS BUILT TO ACT AS A NARROW OUTLET TO A LARGER OPEN AREA, AND WAS POSSIBLY A DRAIN OR A SLUICE. ASSUMING THAT SOME PONDS REMAINED IN USE WHEN HE CHANNLE WAS BUILT, IT COULD HAVE SERVED AS A POST MEDIEVAL FISHPOND, A WATERMILL, TANNING PONDS OR SHEEP-WASHING PONDS. {1}{2}
