Full Description
Cropmarks of a possible Neolithic long barrow, to the south of Forest Wood, Skendleby. Visible as three sides of an incomplete, large oval-shaped enclosure, measuring roughly 18m wide and with a curved southern end. A possible Bronze Age round barrow lies to the immediate east (see MLI88531). Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
This potential long barrow is located on the slope of an east facing escarpment, at the head of a dry valley, and with its long axis running parallel to the contours. The feature is visible as soilmarks, measuring roughly 42+m by 22m, though the full extent does not show. The visible extent comprises one long straight side, with part of a parallel return and a convex terminal. The parish boundary between Claxby St Andrew and Skendleby runs close to the east of the site, along the edge of the escarpment. {2}{3}{4}{5}
This probable long barrow to the north of Haugh Walk Plantation was assessed for scheduling by Historic England in April 2019. It was decided that the criteria for scheduling was not met in this instance, as the barrow could not be discerned on more recent aerial imagery, and there was insufficient evidence to confidently interpret its function, origin or degree of survival. Reassessment of the earlier aerial photography showed the feature as a very faint, incomplete U-shaped ditched feature, extending for approximately 55m by 22m. A geophysical survey of the site, conducted in 2018, recorded a number of linear magnetic anomalies in this area, though most were considered to be the result of geological or agricultural activity. {6}
