Full Description

One of five decoys in Friskney parish, recorded in 1807; two of which were still in use in 1829. {1}{2}{3}{4} The buried and earthwork remains of a post-medieval decoy pond. Documentary and cartographic evidence show that this decoy pond was one of twelve decoys formerly in the area, and one of five in Friskney parish in 1807. The decoy is star-shaped with six pipes. Known as Shaw's Decoy in 1774, this decoy is thought to be one of three decoys marked on a map of 1779, and was marked as Shaw's Decoy on a map of 1828. In the late 19th century, the decoy was known as Friskney New Decoy. The decoy was worked by George Skelton senior, a member of a famous family of decoymen. Skelton left Friskney for Norfolk in 1807, and the decoy was worked by his sons, William and Henry, until 1845. From then on, the decoy was managed by William's son, John Skelton, on behalf of Captain Hopkins, until 1860, when it was taken over by Thomas Crowe. The decoy has not been worked since 1878, and was later passed to the Booth Estate, who donated it to the Lincolnshire Trust for Nature Conservation in 1950. All fence posts and a wooden hut are excluded from the scheduling, although the ground beneath them is included. {5}
