Full Description
Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow to the north-east of Tetney, identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}
Observations of much more extensive earthwork remains in this area were made whilst site visits were conducted as part of the Lincolnshire Coastal Grazing Marsh project. {2}
Large areas of these ridge and furrow earthworks show up very prominently on the Bing Maps aerial photographic layer. {3}
Part of the ridge and furrow remains in this area were the subject of a programme of earthwork survey, conducted in February 2021 to inform proposed residential development on land to the west of Hoop End. The remains in the surveyed field were visible as a series of parallel linear earthworks, aligned on a roughly north-west to south-east axis, and with the bases of the hollows spaced between 7 and 9 metres apart. The earthworks displayed a very slight curve at their southern end, typical of the 'reverse-S' shaped curves created by ox-drawn ploughing. The remains of a later footpath or animal trackway was also noted as a roughly south-west to north-east aligned earthwork at the southern end of the field. {4}{5}
