Full Description

In the churchyard of the Church of St Margaret is a complete Perpendicular cross, including the castellated knop at the top of the shaft and the carvings of the Crucifixus and the Virgin on the head. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} Ashlar stone cross with 19th century restoration work. Square base with 19th century tapering octagonal shaft, having broach stops to alternate sides of the base. Shaft topped with a castellated capital surmounted by the restored 15th century cross. Has effigies of Christ to one side of the cross, and the Virgin and child to the other. Castellated triangular hood mould over. For the full description and the legal address of this listed structure please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {7} The cross stands on the edge of a raised area of the churchyard which is cut away on the south and east by churchyard paths. On these sides the cross foundation is visible; it is constructed of stone and concrete, which is principally modern in date. On the south face of the cross-head is carved a representation of the Crucifixion, and on the north face is the figure of the Virgin Mary. For full detail see the scheduling document. {8}
