Full Description

A breastplate and backplate of early 17th century date, found during ploughing to the east of Mareham on the Hill. {1}{2} The site of the find, at Scrafield in Mareham on the Hill parish, is close to the Civil War battlefield of Winceby (fought on the 11th of October 1643 - see PRN 42274), which suggests a context for the find. The two pieces were a peasecod breastplate and a backplate with a scalloped flange, both found in the correct relative position for wear, with the breastplate uppermost. There were no human bones found inside or nearby and it maybe that the armour was thrown off in a hurry to aid flight from the battle. The position of the latchets retaining the shoulder pieces may be significant here: one was in the shut position, the other open – possibly one side was undone so that the armour could be wrenched off. The site of the village of Scrafield lies on a route that might be taken by Royalist troops fleeing back to Horncastle after their defeat in the battle. {3}
