Full Description

Possible site of the old manor house at Lusby. Finds recovered from the site in 1978 included 3 copper alloy buckles, a clasp and 2 Button covers. Also found was a small copper alloy box which contained 2 silver coins of the 17th century, one being a shilling of James I and the other being a half crown of Charles I. {1}{2} During agricultural work at the site in 2006, a length of substantial sandstone foundation was exposed. Adjacent to, and in some places interspersed with, were areas of later brick flooring which appeared to have been laid around the earlier foundations. The bricks appeared to be of 18th century date. A block of carved limestone which had probably formed part of a medieval window or doorway was also seen. Pottery and other domestic finds of medieval and later date were also seen in the surrounding field. It is suggested that this site is the location of the former manor house from medieval to Victorian times. {3} Geophysical survey at the site identified substantial buried wall footings although it was unable to ascertain to which phase of building, modification or re-use they relate to, or even if they relate to the earlier manor house or the 19th century Manor House Farm. Some of the identified walls showed possible correllation with features shown on an estate map of 1857, however these correllations are not certain and several of the walls identified by the survey do not correspond with features shown on this map. {4}
