Summary

A Moated Site in Great Steeping

Type and Period (1)

  • (Medieval to Post Medieval - 1066 AD to 1650 AD?)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

An alleged moat that is not an antiquity, possibly field drainage. {1}{2} It is clearly shown on a number of parish and estate maps. On the early terriers, from the late 16th century (the first is in 1579), quite a good range of buildings appear, originally of earth with straw thatch. In the terrier of 1634 the structures include 'one gate house next the heydey'. The site would appear to be a definite moated site containing vicarage buildings. {3}
