Full Description
The modern (1854) Kelsey Hall is built on the site of the Manor of Kelsey which pre-dates 1582. No trace remains of the earlier structure. {1}{2}
Kelsey Hall, lying some way to the east of the village centre was first referred to in 1507 as Kelsayhall, its name being dervived from the Kelsay family, known from 13th and 14th century documents relating to Steeping which refer to 'William de Kellessay in Steping' in 1299 and 'Ralph de Kelsay' in 1327. The site was still the seat of a small manor in the 19th century. The present Kelsy Hall, a farmhouse of apparent 19th century date is of no great antiquity but stands within the still extant moated enclosure associated with the earlier manor. {3}{4}
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken during groundworks at Kelsey Hall. The watching brief identified a single east to west aligned ditch which contained pottery dating to the late 15th to 15th century. This ditch was sealed by deposits of later medieval and post medieval date, containing pottery dating to the 18th century. The quantity of material, including cattle, sheep and deer bone, suggests domestic occupation in the immediate vicinity in the post-medieval period. {3}{4}
Kelsey Hall, Great Steeping. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with linked working buildings to all four sides of the yard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located on the site. {5}
