St Mary's church was built in the early thirteenth century and heavily restored in 1859-61 by Ewan Christian. It is built mainly of green sandstone rubble blocks. It has lead roofs with crenellations and cross finials. Inside the church there is a fourteenth century piscina in the south wall of the chancel. The chancel itself was heavily restored in the nineteenth century, and contains monuments including one of white marble on a black field to the Rev. Clement Madely who died in 1843. Also a large white monument with a small sepulchre and marble pedestals to George Heald, died 1834 and four slabs in the chancel floor to Thomas Lodinton, died 1723: John Shelly, died 1707: Jane Dymoke, died 1745 and Emma Heald, 1828. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The church is built in a variety of styles, externally it appears to be predominantly Victorian and Perpendicular. However the lower part of the church is built in an Early English style and the upper part is Decorated. The north and south chancels are Perpendicular. {2}{3}{4}
Excavations of the tower floor were undertaken in 1995. Beneath the floor were the remains of six burials, the last burial in this area would have been in 1848 (all burials in the churchyard are thought to have ceased about then). Although dating of the burials is uncertain they are all thought to be eighteenth century. Excavations also revealed the lower courses of the tower arch, this confirmed that all the above ground details in this area were Victorian in inspiration. {7}
