Full Description

Tower mill, thought to date from the early 19th century, but possibly from the late 18th century. Also sometimes known as Kirby Hill Mill. The mill was unusually short when originally built, with only three storeys, and a uniquely styled ogee cap. There were originally four patent sails which drove two pairs of stones (one pair of French stones, and one pair of grey stones). The tower is built of lime-washed brick, with unusual feature of two entrance doors on opposite sides of the ground floor, enabling the millers to get in and out of the tower while the sails were turning (the sails likely having been very clsoe to the ground given the height of the structure). The mill was worked until 1950, when one of the arms broke off the cross. The cap and sails were removed in 1953, with two of the sails being taken to be re-used in the restoration of Heckington Mill (see MLI82961). The tower was converted to use as a clubhouse for a gun club in about 1970, with an additional storey being added at that time, giving the mill an appearance similar to that at Bilsby (see MLI41488). Any remaining internal machinery is thought to have also been removed at that time. The building has more recently been used as a bookshop and tea room. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
