Full Description
The Church of St Andrew is almost entirely Perpendicular in style (1180AD to around 1520AD) but with some 19th century rebuilding and restoration. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Parish church built in the 14th century, and altered in the 15th century. The porch was rebuilt in 1831, the aisles were rebuilt in 1846 and the tower and east end were rebuilt by J. Fowler under the supervision by G.E. Street in 1866. The chancel was restored in 1894. The church is of limestone ashlar, squared greenstone rubble, and ashlar dressings, and features lead roofs. It is comprised of a western tower, clerestoried nave, aisles, chancel, and south porch. The three-stage, early 15th century tower was largely rebuilt in the 19th century, and features stepped corner buttresses, a moulded plinth and string courses, and an embattled parapet with corner pinnacles. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {5}{6}
Part of the foundations for the church's west tower were exposed in July 2020, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for the installation of a new electric power cable. The foundations date to the 1866 rebuilding of the tower, and were comprised of stone ashlar basal courses, resting on a stepped foundation offset of brick stretchers. {6}{7}
