Full Description
Earthwork remains of the medieval village of Skendleby. Earthworks are clearly visible on aerial photographs. Two mills are listed in Skendleby in Domesday. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
The National Mapping Programme plotted a large quantity of earthworks associated with medieval settlement in Skendleby. These appear to have two separate focuses (see also PRN 42055). The earthworks in this area consist of crofts, boundary ditches, a hollow way, field boundaries and earthwork and stonework buildings. {6}
Part of the deserted medieval village directly to the north of St James's chapel was covered in a resistivity survey in January 2005. A series of linear and rectilinear low resistance anomalies may represent boundary/enclosure ditches related to the village. {7}
Aerial photograph mapping and interpretation plotted earthworks including ditches, banks, possible building platforms and ridge and furrow. {8}
