Full Description
The Church of All Saints is mainly Perpendicular in date (1180 to about 1520) but has one Decorated window in the chancel, which was rebuilt in 1888. The remains of a Norman (1066 to 1200) capital suggest the re-use of material from an earlier church in the vicinity. {1}{2}
A parish church which contains features dating from the 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. The chancel was rebuilt in 1888. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {3}
During trial trenching nearby, late Saxon features were recorded in close proximity to the church (see PRN 43903). It is postulated on the basis of this evidence that an Anglo-Saxon predecessor to the present medieval church may have existed, acting as a focal point for settlement. {4}{5}{6}
Remains of two 19th century buttresses were uncovered in 2008, during a watching brief in the churchyard of All Saints' Church, Orby. These were demolished during repairs carried out after the Second World War. A single possible undated grave was also uncovered. The grave was on a north-south alignment and outside the known limits of the current graveyard, suggesting that it may belong to a pre-Christian cemetery or that it may represent the burial of a suicide victim or similar who would have been buried on unconsecrated ground without Christian ceremonies. {7}{8}
