Full Description

Little Cawthorpe is first documented in the mid 12th century, when it was known as 'Calethorp'. {1} Sherds of medieval and post-medieval pottery were found in 1976, in a garden off Watery Lane (PRN 41923a - TF 3578 8384). The assemblage included sherds of Toynton All Saints ware, Old Bolingbroke ware and later black glazed wares of the 13th to 18th centuries. {2}{3} Earthworks of a former medieval field system were identified on the eastern side of the village by the National Mapping Programme. The features were identified from aerial photographs and include the remains of ridge and furrow, separated by former field boundaries. {4} The remains of two pits and a gully of medieval date were recorded in early 2000, during archaeological monitoring of new development on land off Back Lane (PRN 41923b - TF 3581 8382). A small assemblage of 10th to 12th century pottery, including sherds of Stamford ware and Shelly ware, was recovered from the fill of the gully, along with two fragments of probable cattle bone. The features were sealed by a subsoil of silty clay, from which a further sherd of 10th to 12th century Shelly ware pottery was recovered. {5}{6}
