Full Description

A HOARD OF SILVER COINS OF EDWARD I AND II FOUND IN 1875. LITTLE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS KNOWN. FIVE EDWARD I PENNIES IN LINCOLN CCM ARE PROBABLY FROM THIS HOARD. {1}{2}{3} In 1874, 'while some labourers were filling in a ditch and levelling a bank they came upon a large number of ancient silver coins, probably sufficient to fill a quartern, all of the reigns of the Edwards. They appear to be in good preservation, and bear the stamp of a Royal head crowned, and the words "CIVITAS LONDON", and "CIVITAS EBORACVM" (York), evidently the cities or mints where they were coined. The pieces were of three kinds - the groat, halfgroat, and the penny. They were all found together, and buried about three feet from the surface. A great many of the were lost and thown away by the labourers, thinking at first they were nothing more than a collection of cotton-reel tops.' {4}
