Full Description

Pre-1965 aerial photographs showed widespread earthworks of the deserted medieval village of Wainfleet All Saints present between Wainfleet Bank and Back Lane. Most of the earthworks have now been levelled. {1} Three evaluation trenches were dug on land east of the Barkham Arms (TF 4685 5905). The site is within an area of medieval earthworks which appear to relate to the medieval settlement of Wainfleet St Mary. A single ditch/hollow way and man-made pond were uncovered. Some destruction of the ditch or hollow way had already occurred. {2}{3} Following a watching brief of soil stripping on this site, it was noted that the previously identified ditch/hollow way had suffered during the recent levelling of the field. This had caused extensive damage to the upstanding earthworks, which could no longer be identified. Prior to the levelling, the ditch/hollow way must have been visible as a pronounced linear hollow. {4}{5} Evidence of medieval occupation was identified during a watching brief, undertaken during the groundworks phase of construction for a new stables block at Wainfleet Bank (PRN 41761a - TF 46910 59136). A short linear gully, containing small quantities of animal bone and 11th to 12th century pottery sherds of St Neots ware and Thetford ware, was recorded. Unstratified finds of Toynton and Bourne medieval wares were also recovered. {6}{7}
