Full Description
Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon cross with heavy interlaced band and cable decoration, affixed to the north chancel wall of the Church of St Mary (see PRN 41306). It is probably of 7th century date and uncommon to this area. It is said to have been found in the churchyard. {1}
An impressive late Anglo-Saxon slab, 26" by 19", with rope moulding along the edges and a symmetrical pattern of interlace in figures of eight. Remarkably well preserved. {2}
Two fragments, found when the chancel of the church was rebuilt in 1889, now built into the interior of the north wall. The larger stone, 26" by 19", has cable-moulding on three sides, the middle being carved with three bands of interlacement. A second stone with carved work supports the first. Late period. {3}
Two fragments of Anglo-Saxon grave cover and a part of a grave marker are in the church. Rather than being of 7th century date, they are actually thought to date from the mid 10th century to the mid 11th century. The fragments may indicate an earlier use for the site as a burial ground, and possibly suggest the presence of an earlier church. {4}
