Full Description

PRN 41278 (includes records PRN 41275 and 44563 which have now been removed from the HER) Skidbrooke is recorded in 1086 as being called 'Schitebroc' which means the dirty muddy brook. It derives from the Old English 'scite' for dung and 'broc' for brook. {1} It is recorded in the Domesday book as being principally owned by the King, as well as by the Bishop of Durham and William Blund. The minimum population in 1086 was 33 people. By the Lindsey survey in 1115 the major land owner was the Count of Brittany. {2} In 1334, the Lay Susidy returns were considerably higher than the average return for Louthesk wapentake. This implies that the parish was wealthy. {3} In 1377 there were 343 tax payers in Skidbrook and Saltfleet Haven parish. {4} There were three fairs held in Skidbrooke parish. One was granted in 1284 to Peter Galle, which was held on Fridays; another was granted in 1301 to John Bek which was held between the 20 and 27 September and was eight days long; and the third was granted in 1305 to Robert of Willoughby and was held in late May or early June for two days. {4} In 1563 were only 18 households in Skidbrooke village. {5} In the early 18th century the population was 45 to 48 families in the parish, including one Anabaptist family. {6} The population of the parish was 298 in 1801, rising to 417 in 1871 and falling again to 349 in 1901. {7} The site of village of Skidbroke was ploughed up 'several years ago' (a statement made in the early 1960s). Stamford ware and pottery of late Anglo-Saxon to 15th century date was found. {8} Medieval and post medieval pottery (PRN41278h) was found at TF438932. A Torksey ware rim, Stamford ware, shelly ware, gritty ware and high quantity pottery of 14th to 15th century date including hard ware and a decorated bung hole jar, was found. Post medieval pottery was also found. The material was found on the surface next to the church. {9}{10} A substantial scatter of medieval green glazed pottery and seventeenth to nineteenth century pancheon fragments and brick were recovered from north-east of the church at Skidbrooke (PRN41278i - TF4405 9340). {11} Earthwork and cropmarks were observed on aerial photographs as part of the national mapping programme. These include enclosures (PRN41278a-e) at TF 4430 9232, TF 4420 9250, TF 4392 9252, TF 4381 9290 and TF 4367 9308); a windmill mound (PRN41278f) at TF 4376 9310; and a boundary ditch (PRN41278g) at TF 4394 9342. {12}
