Full Description
A medieval kiln was excavated by E.H. Rudkin and H. Whitaker in 1958-9. It was located in field called 'The Roses' and had 5 or 6 flues of c.1300 A.D. date. Finds included decorated jugs, tiles, water pipes and domestic pots. Archaeomagnetic dating suggests that the kiln was operational between 1275 to 1325. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
A silver penny of Edward I was found in one of the flues. {8}
A geophysical survey identified several anomalies that are indicative of kiln-like features near the road in this field. It is possible that the survey located four kiln-like features and a further four probable kilns making a total of eight kilns in this area. {9}
During trial trenching in 1996 in the field known as the Roses, some archaeological features were identified, dating to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, including a pit. There were also later gullies and a boundary ditch. In addition a kiln prop was found, probably from nearby kilns. The kiln excavated in 1958 was not established. {10}{11}
A watching brief recorded several large pits, thought to be clay extraction pits for the pottery industry, later used for dumping waste material from the nearby kilns, as was a pit/gully. Dump deposits dating to the late 13th-14th century were also identified. Fragments of jugs, thought to be from 'The Roses' kiln, were found, along with fragments of pancheons, bowls and curfews thought to have been produced in the immediate vicinity. No kilns or other features directly associated with pottery production were identified, although a kiln prop was recovered. {12}{13}
