Full Description

An early medieval settlement within a major multiperiod site on a south-facing slope overlooking the valley. Middle Saxon pottery types were recovered including Ipswich and Maxey wares. Other finds included an early Anglo-Saxon loomweight, iron objects, glass fragments, hones, 290 bones (including antler), 4 millstone querns, 12 lava querns, a possible pounding stone and 8 large lumps of slag. There were also 19 unidentified Saxon sherds. The finds were recovered from an area of 1.96ha at a height above sea level of 7.5m.{1} During monitoring of the excavation of the footings for an extension to Stickford House by Archaeological Project Services in August 2009, a probably early medieval pit [PRN 41020] was revealed which contained a residual sherd of Saxon pottery. {2}{3}
