Full Description

Site of the former medieval Church of St Andrew. The church was largely rebuilt in 1878, but retained Norman to Perpendicular features. {1}{2} The church had bench ends decorated with poppyheads in the chancel and a 15th century oak screen with tracery and pinnacles. The font dated to the 14th century. An Anglo-Saxon knotwork grave slab had been re-used as a threshold stone in the building of the church (see PRN 42968). {3}{4} The church was declared redundant in 1975, and a visit was made in 1979, to record the structure before its proposed demolition. The church was rebuilt in 1878 by James Fowler of Louth, at a cost of £1386. Although much fo the church was thought to have been taken down and rebuilt, some medieval fabric was preserved in situ, standing to 3m in the north wall of the chancel, and to 2m in the east wall. A medieval aumbry was recorded in the north wall, along with the bottom corner of a medieval east window. Considerable alterations to the church, prior to the 1878 rebuild, were also noted, with a faculty of 1753 being identified that granted the shortening of the west end of the church due to its ruinous condition at that time. {5} The church was demolished in 1981. {6}
