Full Description

40779 The possible site of the deserted medieval village of Stenigot as postulated by Beresford and Hurst. {1}{2} The apparent area of the deserted medieval village is around the church on the axis of the valley. It is under pasture and at TF 2570 8160. {1} Aerial photographs show the earthworks of a small agricultural enclosure divided by a field road and overlaid with cattle tracks radiating from an old gateway. The earthworks suggest desertion to the east of the church. {3}{5}{6} Medieval settlement remains have been recorded as surviving as earthworks in the area of Stenigot House. These remains comprise buildings, tofts, crofts, hollow ways, enclosures, ridge and furrow and stack stands. {4}
